Salsa hecha en Austin.
Gonzo y Su Orquesta is an Austin-based salsa orchestra built around one simple idea: salsa should be felt as much as it is heard.
Led by musician, DJ, producer and bandleader Gonzo Gonzales, the orchestra brings together accomplished musicians from Austin, San Antonio and the Central Texas music community to create a sound that is powerful, sophisticated and, above all, made for dancing.
Rooted in the traditions of classic salsa while carrying the personality and energy of today's Texas Latin music scene, Gonzo y Su Orquesta delivers the full experience of a live salsa orchestra — driving percussion, a commanding horn section, piano, bass, vocals and arrangements designed to move a room.
A musician first.
Gonzo's journey in music began long before there was a DJ Gonzo — and long before Gonzo y Su Orquesta.
He picked up the guitar at around six years old, inspired in part by his older brother, who played in a classic rock band in Peru. By fourteen, his attention had shifted toward salsa and the piano, beginning a relationship with Latin music that would follow him across countries, careers and decades.
At seventeen, Gonzo moved to New York City and studied music at Queens College. Although financial circumstances forced him to leave school after a year, music remained part of his life.
By nineteen, he was behind the piano again, this time performing with Latin Connection, a Queens-based salsa band.
Two years later, another chapter began.
From New York to Germany to Texas.
At twenty-one, Gonzo joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. There he met Puerto Rican singer Luis Cortez, who invited him to join his orchestra — this time not behind the piano, but on congas.
Gonzo performed with Cortez's orchestra throughout his years in Germany before returning to the United States in 2005, when the Army brought him to Fort Hood, Texas.
It didn't take long for salsa to find him again.
From 2006 to 2007, Gonzo played piano with Louis Shati and Orchestra, part of the active Central Texas salsa scene at the time.
Then life took another turn. In 2007, Gonzo began engineering school at the University of Houston. The demands of his studies made performing regularly with a band increasingly difficult.
But walking away from music wasn't an option.
So he found another way to stay in it.
DJ Gonzo
What began as a way to remain connected to music soon became a new chapter of its own.
DJ Gonzo was born.
Over the years, Gonzo grew from a local DJ into an internationally recognized name within the salsa dance community, performing at salsa festivals, congresses and events around the world and sharing his music with dancers from different countries, cultures and generations.
Years behind the turntables gave him a completely different perspective on the music he had spent much of his life playing.
As a DJ, Gonzo experienced salsa from the dance floor outward — learning how to read a crowd, what makes dancers react, what keeps a floor moving, and how arrangements, breaks, percussion and dynamics can completely change the energy of a room.
That international experience also exposed him to different styles, dancers, musicians and interpretations of salsa — influences that would eventually follow him back to the bandstand.
In 2015, that connection to the dance community grew further with the creation of Salsamania Austin, bringing dancers, musicians and internationally recognized artists together through Salsa events in Austin.
But through the festivals, the travel, the events and the years behind the turntables, one thing had never changed:
The musician had never disappeared.
Coming full circle.
After years behind the turntables, Gonzo found himself increasingly drawn back to where everything had started:
playing music.
This time, however, the vision was bigger.
Not simply to join another band.
To build one.
Gonzo y Su Orquesta represents the full circle of that journey — from a six-year-old with a guitar in Peru, to a young salsa pianist in Queens, a percussionist in Germany, a pianist in Texas, a DJ and event producer in Austin, and ultimately, the leader of his own salsa orchestra.
The DJ didn't become a musician.
The musician came back to the bandstand.
The Orchestra
Gonzo y Su Orquesta brings together professional musicians from Austin, San Antonio and the surrounding Central Texas music community, with backgrounds spanning salsa, jazz, Latin music and contemporary styles.
The orchestra is intentionally built around experienced working musicians, creating a collective capable of delivering the power and sophistication of a full salsa ensemble.
Rather than simply recreating songs, the goal is to create a musical experience — tight arrangements, explosive horns, strong vocals with recording artist Danny Gomez, deep percussion and the spontaneous interaction that can only happen when accomplished musicians share a stage.
That philosophy has created opportunities to perform and collaborate with exceptional artists, including legendary salsa trombonist Jimmy Bosch, while the orchestra continues developing its own recordings, repertoire and musical identity.
The Music
The story of Gonzo y Su Orquesta doesn't end on the stage.
Recording and producing music has become another part of developing the orchestra's own identity — combining original productions with new interpretations of music that has influenced Gonzo throughout his musical journey.
Recent releases and productions include:
Gozón 45!
Perdóname
Cuando No Están
The Godfather
Isadora
And the catalog continues to grow.
New recordings are currently in development as Gonzo y Su Orquesta works toward a larger collection of music that represents both where the orchestra comes from and where it is going.
For Gonzo, the studio is an extension of the same philosophy that drives the live orchestra:
Strong arrangements. Real musicianship. And salsa meant to be felt.

Our sound. Our city.
Austin may be known around the world for blues, rock and country.
We're here to make sure salsa has a voice in the Live Music Capital of the World, too.
From original recordings and new interpretations to concerts, festivals, weddings, corporate events and packed dance floors, Gonzo y Su Orquesta represents salsa made in Central Texas while honoring the cultures, musicians and traditions that made this music what it is.
And while the musicians who make up the orchestra come from across Austin, San Antonio and the surrounding region, the project itself was born here.
This is salsa hecha en Austin.
This is Gonzo y Su Orquesta.
